Why yoga helps

Find out the ways yoga helps our body and mind.

On page 123 of your book, Poorvi, the essay 'Yoga—A Way of Life' lists the benefits of yoga. Here is what the text says.

Yoga postures, called ASANAS: the text says they stretch and strengthen the muscles and increase flexibility, endurance and balance. ENDURANCE means the capacity to keep going without giving up. The text says asanas can improve overall fitness and can also help to reduce body pains such as lower back pain.

Breathing techniques and meditation: the text says these help to calm the mind and reduce stress and ANXIETY, which means worry. They relax the mind, improve the quality of sleep and increase concentration.

The text also says that yoga has been shown to BOOST, that is, increase, the immune system, which protects the body from illness; that it can help the heart by lowering blood pressure and improving circulation; and that it can help with weight loss by burning calories.

The essay adds one important piece of advice: when we do asanas, the mind has to be with the body, so we should practise without distractions and match each stretch with our breath.

The text says asanas build strength, flexibility, endurance and balance, and breathing and meditation calm the mind, reduce stress and anxiety, and improve sleep and concentration.
