Yoga's history

Learn about the long history of yoga.

Yoga is very old, and today it is known all over the world. Your book, Poorvi, gives some facts about its history on pages 123 and 127.

Seals from the Sindhu-Sarasvati Civilisation, dating back to about 2700 BC, show that yoga was practised in ancient India. Many people helped it grow over the centuries, and now it has spread all over the world.

On 11 December 2014, the United Nations General Assembly, which had 193 members, accepted the proposal to celebrate 21 June as International Yoga Day. That is why, every year on 21st June, people in many countries do yoga together.

In 2021 the World Health Organisation (WHO) launched an app called WHO mYoga. It has a collection of videos and audio files to teach and support yoga practice. It is easy to use and free, and its aim is to encourage people across the world to practise yoga.

Yoga goes back at least to the Sindhu-Sarasvati seals of 2700 BC; the UN accepted 21 June as International Yoga Day in 2014; the free WHO mYoga app came in 2021.
