Synonyms and antonyms

Learn synonyms and antonyms using words from Ila Sachani's story.

On pages 156 and 157 of your book, Poorvi, you work with words from Ila Sachani's story. A SYNONYM is a word that means the same, or nearly the same. An ANTONYM is a word that means the opposite.

Here are the book's words with their synonyms. Tiny means small. Wonderful means fantastic. Quiet means silent. A task is a piece of work. Tough means difficult. (The book's list also has 'happy' and 'dangerous', but they do not match any of the words.)

And here are their antonyms. Tiny is the opposite of huge. Wonderful is the opposite of terrible. Quiet is the opposite of noisy. Tough is the opposite of easy. Display — to show something — is the opposite of hide. And your book gives 'pastime' as the opposite of 'task': a task is work you have to do, while a pastime is something you do for fun.

The story's glossary gives you a few more meanings. Challenges are difficulties. Awestruck means amazed — that is how Ila's family and friends felt when they saw her designs. Determination means will power. Popularity means fame.

A synonym means the same (tiny - small) and an antonym means the opposite (tiny - huge).
