The National War Memorial

Learn about the National War Memorial in New Delhi.

The last text of Unit 5 in your book, Poorvi, is about the National War Memorial (page 160). Before the poem, the book tells you a few facts about it.

The National War Memorial is in New Delhi, our capital. In Hindi it is called the Rashtriya Samar Smarak. It was set up in February 2019. It is a national monument, a special place for the whole country, built by the Government of India in honour of our brave soldiers.

To honour someone is to show them great respect. The memorial honours the soldiers who served and gave their lives for our country, so that we always remember their courage.

Below the poem, your book shows two photographs. One is of the National War Memorial itself. The other is of the Amar Jawan Jyoti, 'the flame of the immortal soldier'. Amar means one who never dies: the soldiers are gone, but they live on in our memory.

The Amar Jawan Jyoti is an eternal flame: a flame that is kept burning all the time, day and night, so that the soldiers are never forgotten.

The flame never goes out, because the memory it stands for must not either.
