Two kinds of question

Learn two kinds of question, and write questions for Ila Sachani.

On page 159 of your book, Poorvi, you write two questions you would like to ask Ila Sachani. Your book gives two examples: 'Where were you born?' and 'Did you go to school?' They are two different kinds of question.

'Did you go to school?' is a YES/NO question: it can be answered with just 'yes' or 'no'. Yes/no questions usually begin with a helping word such as do, did, is, are, can or will: 'Can you thread a needle?' 'Do you like bright colours?'

'Where were you born?' is a question-word question: it begins with a question word such as what, where, when, who, why or how. It cannot be answered with just 'yes' or 'no' — Ila would have to say 'In Amreli, Gujarat.'

Your book tells you one more thing: when you SPEAK a yes/no question, your voice goes UP at the end. This is called a rising tone. Try it aloud: 'Did you go to school?'

A yes/no question (Did you go to school?) can be answered with yes or no and ends with a rising tone; a question-word question (Where were you born?) begins with what, where, when, who, why or how.
