Maheshwari sarees

Find out about the beautiful Maheshwari sarees.

In the chapter 'Maheshwar' (your book, Santoor, page 127), Chachi tells Aarav and Ananya that the people of Maheshwar weave the famous Maheshwari sarees, made from cotton and silk.

On page 131, your teacher reads a short passage about these sarees. Here is what it tells, in the same order.

First: Maheshwari sarees were first made of pure silk. Next: later, cotton was added, so the sarees were woven with both silk and cotton, and the handloom weaving of Maheshwar grew. Then: the sarees are famous for their reversible borders and pallus. Reversible means both sides can be worn outside. They come in colours like peacock blue, bright yellow, forest green and an Indian red dye called Aal.

Last: today, Maheshwari sarees are sold all over India and in other countries too.

Maheshwari sarees were first pure silk, later silk and cotton; they are famous for reversible borders, and today they are sold in India and other countries.
