The Tinkling Bells
Opposites
Learn words with opposite meanings.
Words with opposite meanings are called opposites. On pages 17 and 18 of your book, Santoor, you circle the opposite of a word taken from the story 'The Tinkling Bells'.
Beautiful and ugly are opposites. Chacha showed Chinna some beautiful bells: lovely to look at. Something ugly is not nice to look at. Buy and sell are opposites too. Kamala said she would give Chinna money to buy the bells: to buy is to pay money and get something. Chacha sells the bells: to sell is to give something and get money for it.
Whispered and shouted are opposites. Chinna whispered to his mother: he spoke very softly. To shout is to speak very loudly.
Reward and punishment are opposites. A reward is something good you get for doing well, like a prize. A punishment is something unpleasant you get for doing wrong.
Be careful: some words mean nearly the SAME, not the opposite. Beautiful and attractive, buy and purchase, reward and prize, whispered and murmured are pairs that mean nearly the same thing.
