The Tinkling Bells

Comparing with -er and -est

Compare things using words that end in -er and -est.

On page 16 of your book, Santoor, there are three friends in grade 4: Chinna, Charu and Jasmine. Chinna is tall. Charu is taller than Chinna. Jasmine is the tallest person in the group.

When we compare TWO people or things, we add -er to the describing word and use 'than': Charu is taller than Chinna. Aman is shorter than Jiya. An ant is smaller than an elephant.

When we compare one with a whole group, we add -est and use 'the': Jasmine is the tallest in the group. February is the shortest month of the year. Your book also says that January is the coldest month of the year.

So the words go like this: tall, taller, tallest. small, smaller, smallest. fast, faster, fastest. smart, smarter, smartest.

Add -er and use 'than' to compare two (Charu is taller than Chinna); add -est to compare one with a whole group (Jasmine is the tallest).
