One Thing at a Time

a.m. and p.m.

Learn how to write morning and evening times, and write about your day.

On page 40 of your book, Santoor, you write about your daily routine, with the times, using a.m. and p.m.

A day has 24 hours, but a clock shows only 12. So we add a.m. or p.m. to say which half of the day we mean.

We use a.m. for times from midnight until noon (12 o'clock in the daytime): the night and the morning. We use p.m. for times after noon: the afternoon, the evening and the night, until midnight.

Examples: I wake up at 6 a.m., in the morning. The activity ends at 11 a.m., late in the morning, before noon. School ends at 2 p.m., in the afternoon. I go to bed at 9 p.m., at night.

a.m. is for times from midnight to noon (6 a.m. is morning); p.m. is for times after noon (2 p.m. is afternoon, 9 p.m. is night).
