Riddles

Guess the answers to some fun riddles.

A riddle describes something in a puzzling way, and you have to guess what it is. On page 41 of your book, Santoor, there are three riddles. Read them in your book; here they are, told in short.

Riddle 1 tells of thirty white horses standing on a red hill. Sometimes they chomp and stomp, and sometimes they stay quite still. The answer is teeth! The white horses are your teeth, and the red hill is your gums. When you eat, your teeth chomp; when you stop, they are still.

Riddle 2 tells of a tall lady in a white frock, with a yellow face and a red nose. The longer she stands, the shorter she grows. The answer is a candle! The white frock is the candle's white wax, and the yellow face and red nose are its flame. As a candle burns, it gets shorter and shorter.

Riddle 3 asks you to guess something that is hard and brown on the outside, but soft and white on the inside. The answer is a coconut! Its shell is hard and brown, and the coconut inside it is soft and white.

To solve a riddle, take each clue one by one, and ask: what fits ALL the clues?

A riddle gives clues in a puzzling way; your book's three riddles are teeth, a candle and a coconut.
