The Old Stag

He, she, his, her

Learn when to use he, she, his and her.

On page 52 of your book, Santoor, you write about your best friend by filling in a paragraph. Instead of saying your friend's name again and again, you use he or she, and his or her.

'He' and 'she' stand in for a person's name. For a boy we say he; for a girl we say she. 'My best friend's name is Jasmine. She is nine years old. She studies in class 4.'

'His' and 'her' tell who something belongs to. For a boy we say his; for a girl we say her. 'Her hobbies are drawing and dancing.' 'Ravi has a new bat. His bat is blue.'

So: for a boy, we say he, and his bag, his book. For a girl, we say she, and her bag, her book.

Use he and his for a boy, she and her for a girl: 'Jasmine is nine. She loves books. Her favourite book is about birds.'
