Not the same meaning

Learn the difference between words that mean the same and words that do not.

Some words mean the same, or almost the same. Huge and big both mean large. Some words mean the opposite. Tiny is the opposite of large.

On pages 82 and 83 of your book, Santoor, each sentence has a word in bold, and you circle the word that does NOT mean the same. Here are the answers.

Large: huge and big mean the same, tiny does not. Praised: celebrated and cheered are close, ignored is not. Margin (the edge of a page): boundary and border are close, centre is not. Contest: a match is a contest, a playground is not. Jolt: a shock and a disturbance are like a jolt, calm is not.

Repair: rebuild and mend mean the same, ruin does not. Most-liked: favourite and beloved mean the same, disliked does not. Rival: an opponent and a competitor are rivals, a friend is not.

A good trick: put each word into the sentence in place of the bold word. If the meaning changes a lot, that is the word that does not fit.

To find the word that does not mean the same, try each word in the sentence; the one that changes the meaning is the odd one.
