The Lagori Champions

The odd one out

Find the odd one out in a list of words.

In a list of things that belong together, one word may not fit. We call it the odd one out.

On page 84 of your book, Santoor, your teacher reads out sentences, and each one has a word that does not fit. Here are four of them.

Sports: football, basketball, reading, running and swimming. Reading is the odd one out. It is not a sport. Games: Kabaddi, basketball, badminton, kho-kho, knitting and Lagori. Knitting is the odd one out. It means making clothes with wool and needles, not playing a game.

Sports training: climbing, sprinting, jumping, stretching and writing. Writing is the odd one out. It does not train your body for sport. Games played with a ball: cricket, hockey, skipping, tennis and volleyball. Skipping is the odd one out. You skip with a rope, not a ball.

To find the odd one out, first ask: what do most of the words have in common? Then find the one word that does not.

Find what most words in a list share; the one word that does not share it is the odd one out.
