Traditional Indian games

Learn about traditional Indian games.

India has many traditional games. On pages 98 and 99 of your book, Santoor, your teacher describes some games, and you guess their names.

Seven stones are stacked on top of each other. One team knocks them down with a ball, then quickly stacks them again while the other team tries to hit them with the ball. This is Lagori, the game of Chapter 8 (in Rajasthan it is called Satoliya).

There are two teams. One player crosses into the other team's side, saying the name of the game again and again without taking a breath, and tries to tag as many players as possible before getting back. This is Kabaddi.

The game is played with two wooden sticks, a short one and a long one. You hit the short stick to make it jump, then hit it again to send it flying far. This is Gilli Danda. In another game, children flick small round glass balls with their fingers to knock out other glass balls placed in a circle. This is marbles.

On page 100, you name more games: skipping (jumping over a rope as it turns), kite flying, and spinning a top (a toy that spins on its point). Games like these make our bodies and minds strong.

Lagori knocks down and restacks seven stones, Kabaddi has a raider chanting in one breath, Gilli Danda hits a short stick with a long one, and marbles flicks glass balls.
