Long and short 'oo'

Learn the long and short sounds of 'oo', as in book and food.

The name of your book, Santoor, has 'oo' in it. So does the word 'book'. Say 'book'. Now say 'Santoor'. Can you hear the difference?

In 'book' the 'oo' sound is short and quick. In 'Santoor' the 'oo' sound is long: you hold it, 'ooo'.

These words have the LONG 'oo' of Santoor: school, maroon, scooter, bloom, food and moon.

These words have the SHORT 'oo' of book: hood, foot, shook, look and took.

The spelling is the same, 'oo', so you have to listen. Say each word aloud, slowly, and ask: is it long like 'moon', or short like 'book'?

'oo' can be long, as in Santoor, school and moon, or short, as in book, foot and look.
