Making new words

Join two words together to make a new word.

Sometimes we can join two words to make one new word. Your book, Santoor, shows it on page 21: sun + rise = sunrise, the time when the sun comes up in the morning.

The word 'sun' makes more new words. Sun + set = sunset, when the sun goes down in the evening. Sun + shine = sunshine, the bright light of the sun. Sun + flower = sunflower, a big yellow flower.

The word 'ball' comes at the END of some new words. Foot + ball = football. Basket + ball = basketball. Volley + ball = volleyball. Base + ball = baseball. These are all games played with a ball.

When we join the two words, we write them together as one word, with no space: football, not 'foot ball'.

Two words can join to make one new word: sun + rise = sunrise, foot + ball = football.
