Friend words

The word 'rainbow' is made of two words: rain + bow. Your book, Santoor, calls the second word a 'friend word'. A word and its friend word join to make a new word.

Here are the new words on page 34. Tea + cup = teacup, a cup for tea. Wrist + watch = wristwatch, a watch you wear on your wrist. Arm + chair = armchair, a chair with places to rest your arms. Earth + worm = earthworm, a worm that lives in the soil.

Sun + flower = sunflower. Table + cloth = tablecloth, a cloth that covers a table. Note + book = notebook, a book to write notes in. Ear + ring = earring, a ring worn in the ear. Tooth + paste = toothpaste, the paste you brush your teeth with.

The new word often tells us what the thing is or where it goes: a wristwatch goes on the wrist, and a tablecloth goes on the table.
