The Decision of the Panchayat
Prepositions
Learn prepositions, the small words that show where things are.
A preposition is a small word that shows how one thing is linked to another: where it is, when it happens, or why. On pages 96 and 97 of your book, Santoor, you fill in prepositions in sentences about the farmer and the Panchayat.
Some prepositions tell where. The farmer went to the village chief (towards her). The members gathered under the banyan tree (below its branches). The farmer lived in a small village.
Some tell when. The Panchayat members listened to both sides before coming to a decision: first they listened, then they decided. The farmer decided to buy a well after buying his third field: first the field, then the well. The villagers agreed to meet at a later time.
Some tell with whom, or why. The villagers tried to reason with the cunning man: they talked to him. The neighbour was punished for his dishonesty: his dishonesty was the reason.
To choose the right one, read the whole sentence and ask: does it tell where, when, with whom, or why?
