Unit 9 (The Proposal)
How can we control anger?
Explain strategies for managing anger.
What anger is. Anger is a natural feeling. The passage calls it an absence of peace: with ourselves, with other people, or with a situation. Handled well, it can be useful; let loose, it does harm. It is not always unhealthy.
Step 1: calm down. Before you react, take a few moments:
- take five deep breaths;
- count to ten (counting backwards needs even more attention);
- drink some water;
- change your place: step out of the room.
Step 2: let it out safely. Physical activity reduces stress: dancing, clapping, stamping your feet, a walk, even making funny faces in the mirror. (Breaking things is not on the list.)
Step 3: think it through. Look at the situation from the other person's side. Think of solutions. Don't hold a grudge, and know when to ask for help. Seeing your own shortcomings honestly can become a great strength of character.
The big idea. We cannot control other people or what happens. We can control only our response. So make it a good one: be tolerant, try to understand, and let love grow.
Example: your little brother breaks your pencil. Breathe, count to ten. Was it an accident? Then answer calmly: share a pencil, and ask him to be careful.
