Unit 9 (The Proposal)
Krishnamurti on violence
Explain Krishnamurti's ideas about violence and education.
Two kinds of violence. J. Krishnamurti writes about violence in our lives.
- Physical violence: killing, hurting someone (on purpose or carelessly), cruel words.
- Inward violence: hating, disliking, harshly judging, quarrelling inside ourselves. Nobody else can see it.
The ultimate violence. He calls war the ultimate violence: people kill for ideas, religious beliefs, nationality or land. He says violence is part of every human being, at every level.
Violence in society and the home. The rich want to keep the poor poor; the poor want to be rich and hate the rich. Violence runs through families too.
What education is for. Not just passing exams or getting a job. Education should help us go beyond violence: to grow into healthy, sane, rational people, not clever people who use their brains to defend cruelty.
A new culture. The old culture of aggression has brought misery. The young must build a new one, not based on violence. Where to start? In your own classroom: help others, don't gossip about teachers or classmates, and don't compete in mean ways.
