The Adventure of the Three Garridebs

A strange name

Retell John Garrideb's story and notice how he reacts to Holmes.

'The Adventure of the Three Garridebs' is a Sherlock Holmes mystery by Arthur Conan Doyle, told, as usual, by Holmes's friend Dr Watson. It happened in June 1902. Holmes asks Watson to find a man named Garrideb, a very unusual name.

Watson finds Nathan Garrideb, of Little Ryder Street, in the telephone book. But he is the very man who has written to Holmes asking for help.

Then a second Garrideb arrives: John Garrideb, who says he is an American lawyer from Kansas. He has a chubby face, and very bright, watchful eyes.

John is annoyed that Nathan has called in a detective. Holmes quietly remarks that his clothes are English.

John explains the story. A rich old American, Alexander Hamilton Garrideb, left his land in three parts, for three adult men named Garrideb. Each share is worth five million dollars. So far, John has found only one other Garrideb: Nathan. A third is still needed.

A fortune, a rare name, and a visitor who does not want a detective: the mystery has begun.
