The Adventure of the Three Garridebs
A rigmarole of lies
List the clues that show John Garrideb is lying.
Holmes tests John. He mentions a friend, Dr Lysander Starr, the Mayor of Topeka, a man Holmes has simply made up. John pretends to know him.
Other details do not fit. John's coat is worn, and his trousers are baggy at the knees from a year's use, yet he claims he has only just come from America. He says he put advertisements in the newspapers, but Holmes reads every advertisement, and saw none.
Holmes and Watson visit Nathan Garrideb. He is a tall, thin, bald old collector, and his room is like a small museum, crowded with coins, fossils, skulls and insects. He hardly ever goes out.
Nathan has no wish for land in America. But John has promised to buy his share for five million dollars. With that money, Nathan dreams of buying more specimens for his collection, and becoming a famous collector.
Every detail of John's story fails Holmes's tests.
