Glory at Twilight

The wheel of fortune

Explain what the forger's story says about crime, punishment and success.

Satyajit remembers how his rise began. As a young clerk, he noticed a nervous man presenting a cheque for two thousand rupees.

Something seemed wrong. He phoned the account holder, found that the cheque was forged, and caught the man outside the bank.

The man wept. His wife was dying of TB (tuberculosis), and he had no money for her medicine.

In court, the forger asked to be punished as a killer would be, because he had brought shame on his wife.

For catching the forger, Satyajit was promoted. At the time, he felt only contempt for the man. Now that he himself is ruined, he feels grateful to him, and sorry for him.

His rise began with another man's fall.
