A hero's welcome

Describe the welcome and the cycle that brings Satyajit back to his village.

A letter arrives from Uncle Srinath, a neighbour from Satyajit's home village (not a real uncle). His fifth daughter, Beena, is to be married, and he asks for Satyajit's 'benediction' (blessing).

Satyajit had paid for the weddings of three of Srinath's earlier daughters. Now, with little money left, he decides to attend this wedding and give a small gift.

He also hopes that the village where he started his life will give him the strength to start again.

At the station, he is amazed: a crowd has gathered to greet him, with a flag and a jasmine garland. Srinath makes a speech about the pride of Bengal.

The village still thinks he is a millionaire. Like his life, the story has come full circle, back to where it started.

The poor village boy comes home as a hero, but the hero is already ruined.
