Living Creatures: Exploring their Characteristics

Respiration

Learn about respiration, a process all living things need.

Think of something you cannot live without, even for a few minutes. Breathing! You breathe all the time, even when you sleep. Watch a dog, a cat, a cow or a buffalo resting, and you can see its belly (abdomen) going up and down as it breathes.

When we inhale (breathe in), air moves from outside to inside the body. When we exhale (breathe out), air moves from inside to outside.

Breathing is part of a process called respiration. Respiration is a characteristic of all living beings.

Do plants respire? Yes. Leaves have tiny pores on their surface called stomata. These pores let the plant take air in and out. They are too small to see with your eyes alone, so we use a microscope to see them. All living beings respire.

Breathing, in which air moves in when we inhale and out when we exhale, is part of respiration; all living beings respire, and plants take air in and out through tiny pores on their leaves called stomata.
