Living Creatures: Exploring their Characteristics
Excretion
Find out how living things get rid of waste.
Have you noticed white patches on shirts around the armpits in summer? They come from sweat.
Sweat is made of water and salts that the body removes as waste. When the water in the sweat dries, the salts are left on the shirt: that is the white patch. The removal of waste products from the body is called excretion.
Sweat is not the only way. Urine is also a product of excretion in animals.
Plants excrete too. They give out extra water and minerals as small droplets on their leaves. Look closely at grass or rose leaves early in the day and you may see them. All living beings excrete.
