Understanding Health

Health: meaning, and the physical and mental dimensions

Describe what keeps body and mind healthy.

Health is more than the absence of disease. WHO (1948): a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. It is shaped by biology, culture, economics and environment, and by access to food, safe water, housing, sanitation and health services.

Health has six linked dimensions: physical, mental, emotional, social, spiritual and environmental.

Physical: a body that works well, through exercise, healthy habits, a balanced diet, bone health and a healthy body mass index; strength, flexibility, coordination and endurance; avoiding harmful substances and knowing when to see a doctor.

Mental: thinking, reasoning, remembering, imagining and learning; it grows through questioning, creative and problem-solving activity, and regular games and sport.

For good mental health: eat well, express feelings, play games you enjoy, sleep about eight hours, spend time with friends and family, ask for help, and avoid tobacco and alcohol.

Health is complete well-being, not just no disease.
