Physical and Physiological Aspects of Physical Education and Sports

Growth and development

Explain how growth and development differ and depend on each other.

Growth is the biological increase in the body's size and shape: mass, height and weight. It begins at conception and continues until physical maturity.

Development is the emerging and expanding of capabilities: a progressive series of qualitative (and quantitative) changes, physical, cognitive, social and emotional.

Growth is quantitative, visible, measurable, due to cell division and limited in time; its limits are set by heredity.

Development is observed through mature behaviour, is harder to measure (mental ability, achievement), lasts all life and is shaped more by the environment (nutrition, activity, protection from disease, culture).

Growth forms the base for development: without proper growth the expected development may not be reached.

Growth is getting bigger; development is getting better.
