National sports awards

Tell the awards apart.

The Government of India honours sportspersons and coaches with national awards.

Dronacharya Award (first given in 1985): for coaches who have trained a person or team for at least two years with outstanding results.

Arjuna Award (from 1961): for outstanding performance at international level, chosen by a selection committee from nominations by national federations.

Khel Ratna (from 1991-92): India's highest sports honour ('sports gem'); the first winner was the chess champion Viswanathan Anand. It has since been renamed after Major Dhyan Chand.

Dhyan Chand Award: for lifetime achievement in sport, named after the hockey great; the chapter's example is Bobby Aloysius. Cash amounts in the book are old; they have been raised since.

Coaches get the Dronacharya; players the Arjuna and the Khel Ratna; a lifetime gets the Dhyan Chand.
