Kabaddi

Explain how points are won in kabaddi.

Kabaddi is an indigenous game of India, traced to the Mahabharata, known as Hu-Tu-Tu, Ha-Do-Do, Chedugudu and Kaunbada. Rules were framed in 1918 and printed in 1923; it was demonstrated at the 1936 Berlin Olympics; the AKFI was founded in 1973.

Court 13 m x 10 m for men (11 m x 8 m for boys and women) with 1 m lobbies; the baulk line is 3.75 m and the bonus line 4.75 m from the mid-line. Today it is played indoors on mats.

A team has 10-12 players, seven on court. Men play two halves of 20 minutes, women and juniors 15, with a 5-minute break; two 30-second time-outs per half.

Raid: chant 'Kabaddi' all the way, one raider at a time, the next raid within 5 seconds. A point for each opponent out; a lona (whole team out) gives two extra points; a bonus point for crossing the bonus line when there are six or more defenders. Ties in knock-outs: 5-5 raids, then a golden raid.

Defence holds: ankle, thigh, knee, waist, wrist, arm. Attack: toe touch, side kick, front kick, mule (back) kick. Cards: green warning, yellow 2-minute suspension, red suspension from the match.

Chant, touch, get home; a lona is worth two extra.
