West coast ports
Explain why Jawaharlal Nehru Port was developed.
Ports on the west coast:
- Deendayal Port (Kandla), at the head of the Gulf of Kachchh: built after Partition; handles petroleum and fertilisers. It has an offshore terminal at Vadinar.
- Mumbai: the biggest natural harbour, with the largest oil terminal in India. Its hinterland covers Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh.
- Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Nhava Sheva): the largest container port, built to relieve the pressure on Mumbai.
- Mormugao (Goa): exports iron ore, especially to Japan. The Konkan Railway extended its hinterland.
- New Mangalore: exports iron ore from Kudremukh.
- Cochin (Kochi): called the 'Queen of the Arabian Sea', a natural harbour close to the busy Suez-Colombo shipping route.
The west coast has many good natural harbours.
