The Transport Museum
Word problems in steps
Solve word problems step by step.
Your book, Maths Mela (Chapter 13, The Transport Museum), ends with word problems that take more than one step. First, the Punjab Mail train. On its first journey, 96 passengers travelled in 3 coaches, the same number in each: 96 ÷ 3 = 32 people in each coach. Today it has 24 coaches, and each coach can carry 72 passengers: 24 × 72 = 1400 + 40 + 280 + 8 = 1728 people.
Amala goes on a school trip to Goa with her classmates: 36 children and 6 teachers, so 42 people. They ride a double-decker bus where 2 people sit on each seat. They need 42 ÷ 2 = 21 seats. The bus has 15 seats on the lower deck and 10 on the upper deck, so 25 seats, with room for 50 people. There are enough seats! A child's ticket costs ₹359 and a teacher's ticket costs ₹899. The teachers' tickets cost 6 × ₹899 = ₹5394.
Kedar works in a brick kiln that makes 125 bricks in a day. In a 30-day month it makes 125 × 30 = 3750 bricks.
Chilika lake in Odisha is famous for its Irrawaddy dolphins. Eight people go on a trip from Puri. Each person needs one bus ticket to Satapada, costing ₹60. Then they share a boat ride that costs ₹1200 for all 8 people, so each person's share is ₹1200 ÷ 8 = ₹150. Each person spends ₹60 + ₹150 = ₹210.
