Living Together

Communities working together

See how people in a community help each other in times of need.

People in a community help each other, especially in times of need. Your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 1), gives three examples from different parts of India.

In Kanker, in Chhattisgarh, the Chinar river often overflows in the rainy season. Then it is very hard to move goods and vehicles, and to reach schools and hospitals. In the rainy season of 2024, the whole community came together and built a simple but strong bridge of bamboo, stones and other material, in just two days. Now students can reach their schools and villagers can cross the river easily.

In Assam, Uruka is a time of joy at Magh Bihu. People come together to build a hut of bamboo and hay, called a Bhela Ghar. The celebration ends with a big feast, where they cook, eat and dance together.

In Sikkim, when it is time to harvest the crops, people from the community come together to help each other. These farming specialists are called Khetala. Helping like this makes the harvest easier and brings people closer.

When a community works together — building a bridge in Kanker, a Bhela Ghar in Assam, or harvesting with the Khetala in Sikkim — hard jobs become easier.
