Our Sky

The Sun's path

Follow the Sun's path across the sky.

Can you guess the brightest object in the sky? Your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 10), says it is the Sun! The Sun is so bright that we cannot see the other stars while it is in the sky. The Sun gives us light and heat.

Every day, the Sun seems to make a journey across the sky. In the morning, it appears to rise in the East. Then it seems to move up until, at noon, it is overhead, high above us.

In the afternoon, it appears to move down towards the West, on the other side of the sky, until it disappears in the evening. We say the Sun 'appears' to move, because that is how it looks to us from the ground.

The Sun is the brightest object in the sky and gives us light and heat; it appears to rise in the East, is overhead at noon, and moves down towards the West until it disappears.
