Our Sky

Shadows through the day

Watch how your shadow changes through the day.

Have you noticed your shadow moving along with you? If you run, it seems to run too. Your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 10), shows how shadows change during the day.

In the early morning, shadows are long. At noon, shadows are short. In the evening, shadows are long again, but they point the opposite way from the morning shadows.

Why do they change? A shadow always falls on the side away from the Sun. In the morning, the Sun is in the East, so your shadow points towards the West. In the evening, the Sun is in the West, so your shadow points towards the East. Your book says the direction of the shadow changes because the Sun appears to move across the sky.

Morning shadows are long, noon shadows are short, and evening shadows are long again but point the opposite way, because a shadow falls away from the Sun and the Sun appears to move.
