Beaks and claws
Find out what a bird's beak and claws tell us about how it lives.
Birds use their beaks and claws to eat and to do other things. By looking at a bird's beak and claws, we can guess what it eats.
An eagle has a sharp, curved beak and sharp claws. It uses them to catch its prey: animals such as fish, snakes and rats.
A sunbird has a long beak, which it uses to drink nectar from flowers. A sparrow has a short, strong beak to crack seeds.
A parrot eats fruits. A duck has webbed feet for swimming, and it eats grains and worms.
A bird's beak and claws show how it eats: the eagle catches prey, the sunbird drinks nectar and the sparrow cracks seeds.
