Food for Health

Three food groups

Learn the three food groups our body needs.

Our body needs many kinds of food to stay healthy, full of energy and strong. No single food has all the nutrients our body needs, so we must eat a variety of foods.

Your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 5), sorts foods into three groups. Energy-giving foods give us energy: rice, potato, wheat, maize, banana, apple, sweet potato, honey and millets. Butter, ghee and oil also give energy.

Body-building foods help us grow, build our muscles and make us strong: pulses, legumes, soybeans, chickpeas, peanuts, tofu, milk, cheese, beans, almonds, walnuts, eggs, meat and fish.

Protective foods protect us from diseases. They are fruits and vegetables like carrot, orange, lemon, papaya, spinach, cabbage, guava, amla and tomato.

Foods belong to three groups — energy-giving, body-building and protective — and we eat a variety because no single food has everything the body needs.
