How Things are Made

Making recycled paper

Make your own recycled paper with Pihu.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 8), Pihu asks, 'Maa, can we make such paper?' Maa says, 'Why not? Let us try.' Here are the steps for making recycled paper, in this order.

First, collect the materials: old newspapers, some fenugreek (methi) seeds and water. Second, tear the newspapers into small pieces and soak them in water with a few methi seeds. Leave them overnight. The methi seeds are a binding material: they help the paper pulp stick together.

Third, blend or mash the soaked paper and seeds to make a wet mixture. You can use a grinder, your hands, or any other tool. Fourth, spread this paste on a flat base and roll it out into thin sheets. Fifth, leave the sheets to dry. Your recycled paper is ready!
