How Things are Made

Colouring paper

Colour and design your recycled paper.

Once Pihu has made her recycled paper, she wants to colour and design it. Your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 8), says that paper can be coloured with natural dyes or with artificial dyes.

Natural dyes are made from different parts of a plant: the leaf, the flower, the root, the seed or the stem. Because they come from plants, natural dyes are safe to use. They are also used to colour many other things, such as clothes and pots.

Your book tries four natural ingredients for colouring pieces of paper: turmeric, spinach, beetroot and henna. Turmeric gives the paper a yellow colour. You use pieces of paper of the same size, and the same amount of each ingredient, so that you can compare the colours fairly.

Paper can be coloured with natural or artificial dyes; natural dyes come from parts of plants like the leaf, flower, root, seed and stem, are safe, and also colour clothes and pots.
