Sikkim's culture

Learn about the culture of Sikkim from Nayan's diary.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 9), Nayan reads from his diary. He was in Gangtok, in Sikkim. The weather was cool, and the air felt clean and fresh. The local people were kind, and they guided his family to a special spot to see Mount Kangchenjunga. When the sunlight fell on its snowy peaks, they turned golden, like a beautiful painting!

Nayan enjoyed Sikkimese food: warm thukpa, and sweet, soft sel roti. He saw that the local people wear beautiful traditional dresses called the bakhu, the dumdyam and the Gunyo cholo.

One of the most important festivals in Sikkim is Loosong and Namsoong. It marks the start of the Sikkimese New Year and celebrates the hard work of the farmers. People enjoy local dishes, traditional games, and a mask dance called chaam.

In Sikkim, Nayan saw Mount Kangchenjunga's snowy peaks turn golden, ate thukpa and sel roti, saw the bakhu, dumdyam and Gunyo cholo, and learnt of Loosong and Namsoong, the New Year festival with the chaam mask dance.
