Different Lands, Different Lives

Life in the plains

Learn about life in the plains with Gurpreet.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 9), Gurpreet tells his friends about his visit to his grandparents in Amritsar, Punjab. When he arrived, his grandmother welcomed him with the Punjabi words 'Jee aayan nu puttar!', which mean 'Welcome, my dear child!'

Amritsar is in the plains. Gurpreet says there are large fields there. The soil is rich and fertile, which means crops grow well in it, so many people work as farmers.

Gurpreet also tells them about the favourite food there: makki di roti, a roti made with corn flour, and sarson da saag, made from mustard leaves, eaten with a big glass of lassi.

The plains of Amritsar have large fields of rich, fertile soil where many people farm, and the favourite food is makki di roti and sarson da saag with lassi.
