The Golden Temple

Visit the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

Amritsar is home to a very special place. Your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 9), tells you about the Golden Temple, also called Sri Harmandir Sahib. It is one of the most famous Gurudwaras.

The Gurudwara is covered in gold, and it is surrounded by a calm sarovar, a large tank of water.

The Golden Temple has a langar sewa, a community kitchen that serves free meals to everyone who comes. It is one of the largest community services in the world. People volunteer, which means they help without being paid: they cook the food, serve it, and wash the dishes.

The Golden Temple (Sri Harmandir Sahib) in Amritsar is a gold-plated Gurudwara with a sarovar around it, and its langar sewa serves free meals to all, cooked and served by volunteers.
