Different Lands, Different Lives

Life in the Rajasthan desert

Learn about life in the Rajasthan desert.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 9), Ritika shows her friends the colourful bangles and the bandhini dupatta she brought from Rajasthan. She tells them that women wear these with beautiful ghaghras while they dance. Men wear colourful turbans and play musical instruments called the khartal and the sarangi.

The traditional houses in the desert are made of mud, with thatched roofs. Water is precious in the desert, so many houses also have tankas: tanks for storing water. Two popular dishes of Rajasthan are dal-bati-churma and ker sangri.

Your book also shows the Jaisalmer Fort. It is a desert fort, with tall, thick walls made of golden-coloured sandstone. People still live inside this fort today.

In the Rajasthan desert, women wear bangles, bandhini dupattas and ghaghras, men wear turbans and play the khartal and sarangi, houses are of mud with thatched roofs and tankas, and the Jaisalmer Fort has golden sandstone walls where people still live.
