Different Lands, Different Lives

Cyclones on the coast

Find out how cyclones affect life on the coast.

Living by the sea is not always easy. In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 9), Chandni tells her friends that strong winds and cyclones hit the coast of Odisha quite often. A cyclone is a very strong storm with fierce winds and heavy rain.

Cyclones harm the lives of people, animals and trees. The coastal states of India face cyclones from time to time.

But people have learnt how to protect lives. They study cyclones and find ways to stay safe. The Government of Odisha has won national and international awards for saving people during cyclones. It did this with early warnings (telling people before the cyclone arrives), advance preparation (getting ready in time), and good management.

Strong winds and cyclones often hit coastal Odisha and harm people, animals and trees, but early warnings, advance preparation and good management save lives, and Odisha has won awards for it.
