Our Vibrant Country

India's languages

Discover the many languages of India, printed on our currency notes.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 5), the class looks closely at a currency note and sees writing in many languages. This shows that people speak many languages in India.

More than a thousand languages are spoken across our country! Each language is rich with its own history, songs and stories.

The same thing has a different name in each language. Your book takes the word 'mango'. In Tamil, a mango is called 'Māmpalam'. Your book asks you to find out what it is called in other languages too, like Telugu, Marathi and Bengali.

People in different parts of India also eat different food, wear different clothes, and enjoy songs and dances that are special to their own area. There are even mobile apps that can translate one language into another, to help us learn and understand many languages.

More than a thousand languages are spoken across India, each with its own history, songs and stories, and the same thing has a different name in each language (mango is 'Māmpalam' in Tamil).
