Rhythms of Nature

India's six seasons

Learn about the six seasons of India.

In your book, Our Wondrous World (Chapter 9), you learn that in India we have six seasons. They are based on how nature changes every few months.

Here are the six seasons, in this order, with their names: Vasanta, which is spring. Grishma, which is summer. Varsha, which is the monsoon. Sharad, which is autumn. Hemant, which is pre-winter. And Shishir, which is winter.

After Shishir, the pattern starts again with Vasanta, because the seasons repeat every year.

The months of each season can be a little different in different parts of India. Your book asks you to find out the months for your own region, and what the seasons are called in your own language.

India has six seasons, in this order: Vasanta (spring), Grishma (summer), Varsha (monsoon), Sharad (autumn), Hemant (pre-winter) and Shishir (winter).
