The Old Stag
Adverbs: how it is done
Learn adverbs that tell how something is done.
In the story 'The Old Stag', the stag greeted his friends warmly every day. The word 'warmly' tells HOW he greeted them. A word that tells how something is done is called an adverb of manner.
Your book, Santoor, gives two more examples on page 49: 'The old stag slowly recovered': slowly tells how he recovered. 'The rabbit quickly ate the carrots': quickly tells how the rabbit ate.
Many of these words end in -ly: badly, cheerfully, quietly, carefully, loudly. But not all of them: 'fast' tells how too, as in 'She runs fast.'
On page 49 there are twelve words, and all of them are adverbs. But only six tell HOW something is done: badly, cheerfully, quietly, carefully, fast and loudly. The others tell something else. Soon, lately and early tell WHEN. Regularly tells how often. Nearby tells WHERE. Highly tells how much.
