Papa’s Spectacles
Where are the spectacles?
Read a short story about a father who keeps losing his spectacles.
On page 6 of your book, Santoor, there is a short story about a father who keeps his spectacles in random places. One day he cannot find them. He looks around the house. He checks a big box that reaches above everyone's waists. He looks among the newspapers kept on the table. He searches for two hours before giving up, and after one last look he sits down on the bed.
The small words in, around, above, among and on are prepositions. They tell us WHERE something is. 'In' means inside. 'On' means resting on top of. 'Above' means higher than. 'Among' means mixed up with many things. 'Around' means all over, or on every side.
The words before and after tell us WHEN something happens. 'Before' means earlier. 'After' means later. He searched for two hours before he gave up: first the searching, then the giving up.
So, to choose the right word, ask: is this sentence telling me where, or when?
