The Wise Parrot

Collective nouns

Learn collective nouns, like a flight of parrots.

In the story, the merchant saw a flight of parrots in the forest. 'Flight' is a collective noun: one word for a whole group of things together.

Your book, Santoor, gives more on page 46. A flight of parrots. A flock of sheep. A pack of wolves. A bouquet of flowers, like the flowers we give to a chief guest. A swarm of bees. An army of ants. A bunch of keys.

Each group has its own word, and we learn them by using them. Think of a pack of wolves howling at night, a swarm of bees buzzing around flowers, and an army of ants marching to the anthill.

Notice that we say 'an army', not 'a army', because 'army' begins with a vowel sound.

A collective noun names a group: a flight of parrots, a flock of sheep, a pack of wolves, a swarm of bees, an army of ants, a bunch of keys.
