Tools and their uses

Learn the names of tools and what they are used for.

On page 111 of your book, Santoor, there are pictures of eleven objects with their names. Here is each one described in words, with what it is used for.

A telescope is a long tube on a stand; we look through it to see faraway things, like the Moon and the stars, much bigger. A camera takes photographs. A stethoscope is what a doctor puts in the ears, with a round end pressed on your chest, to listen to your heartbeat.

A hammer has a heavy metal head on a handle; we use it to hit nails into wood. A screwdriver has a thin metal rod with a flat tip; we turn it to put screws in or take them out. A saw has a long blade with sharp teeth along the edge; it cuts wood. A sickle is a curved blade on a short handle; farmers use it to cut crops and grass.

In the kitchen, a grater has a surface full of small sharp holes; we rub carrots or cheese on it to cut them into thin pieces. Tongs are like two long arms joined at one end; we use them to pick up hot things, like a roti from the fire.

The compass in the picture is the one in your geometry box: two arms joined at the top, one with a sharp point and one holding a pencil; we use it to draw circles. The mouse is a computer mouse; we move it and click it to work on a computer.

Every tool has its own job: a stethoscope listens to the heart, a sickle cuts crops, tongs pick up hot things, and a compass draws circles.
